Here I sit in China, after being away from my 3 boys (Carson 4 1/2, Sam and Brady both 16 months) struggling with not being able to read to them or play or hear the constant chatter of their busy day. No one ever tells you how difficult it is to really be gone for a week from the little guys. Many times you’ll hear of parents who can’t wait to get away from the spills and messes and crying and naps times etc. in favor of a 3-4 day business trip, but I am a true believer of enjoying the “child journey”. My business trips have proven to be a hard time as I miss my boys terribly. So I decided to write this post, to give you a few tips that help shorten the trip bring your kids closer, even if you are half way around the world.

1. Type your kid’s or kids’ favorite book in 3-4 point font into a little business card size laminated sheet that you can shove in your wallet. Then you can read to them at night and have your spouse turn the page for you as they eavesdrop. This one is really great and makes the nighttime (or whatever time) routine still present.

2. Set an alarm daily and tell your kids that you will call exactly at X:00 every day. Teach them how to answer the phone at that time (spouse assisted if needed), and ask about their day. This gives them something to look forward to and a scheduled break for yourself as well. Your co-workers will never bother you about this one either.

3. Always bring home gifts (this one is a given).

4. Tell them about what you have eaten. Kids love food and talking about it. Tell them in detail, you’ll find they will ask once you start the routine. Also this gives you the opportunity to take them to try that food or make it together when you return.

5. Plan an Activity for the day after you return home that is out of the ordinary. Have them get as much as they can ready for the event. Gives them a purpose.

6. Always bring recent pictures. even a quick snap the day before you left printed on cheap paper off the printer. have your kids write you a message on the back (usually assited by your spouse writing what they say).

The may seem trite, but you’ll be amazed how much it helps shorten the journey.

Until next time, speedy travels
